Follow these simple steps to properly plant a tree:
- Dig a hole that is twice the diameter of the pot and as deep as the pot.
- Scrape the bottom of the hole.
- Mix some potting soil with topsoil.
- Backfill the tree in layers, packing each layer by hand.
- Ensure that the tree is at the same height or slightly higher than the surrounding soil.
- Build a 4-inch-tall berm around the tree that is 2 feet in diameter to collect water.
Guidelines for Watering Newly Planted Trees:
- During the first month, water the tree once a week with the same volume of water as the size of the pot. For example, a tree that was planted in a 1-gallon pot should receive 1 gallon of water per week.
- After the first month, water the tree every two weeks, using twice the volume of the pot.
- Water the tree early in the day or late in the afternoon to avoid evaporation.
- Water at the base of the tree, not on the leaves or branches, to prevent disease and promote healthy growth.
- Mulch around the tree to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. This will also help prevent weed growth and protect the roots from damage.
For newly planted trees, it's best to apply fertilizer sparingly until they've taken root and established themselves. This typically happens after their initial growing season.
After 1 year of growth, fertilizing trees once annually is recommended to encourage healthy growth and establishment.
The survival of trees is dependent on several variables such as water, sunlight, fertilization, soil quality, and so on. As a result, determining the cause of a tree's failure can be challenging. To ensure years of benefits and enjoyment, it's crucial to make informed planting decisions. Remember, there's no return policy on trees, so choose wisely!
